Magnesium
Magnesium is much more than just a mineral. The energy currency of the body, Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) must be bound to magnesium in order to be active. This means that all bodily processes, such as enzymatic reactions, protein formation and DNA repair are magnesium dependent. Magnesium deficiency can leave us feeling tired and stressed. In fact, magnesium is often referred to as the 'anti-stress mineral'. More specific functions include:
- Protein synthesis
- Vitamin D synthesis
- Muscle and nerve function
- Blood glucose control, and blood pressure regulation
- Nerve impulse conduction and muscle contraction
- Heart rhythm
- Inflammation control
Magnesium is particularly important for those who lead stressful lives because magnesium stores are depleted under stress in the body.
Vitamin B6: Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate
B6 is one of the eight B vitamins that in its active form, is known as coenzyme pyridoxal-5-phosphate (PLP or P5P). Many brands use a cheap form of B6 known as Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (inactive) which is poorly assimilated and can actually inhibit the natural actions of B6. Active P5P is involved in more than 140 different metabolic reactions in your cells, including methylation. More specific functions include:
- Maintains normal nerve function
- Aiding magnesium utilisation
- Helps the body make haemoglobin; the protein that transports oxygen
- Blood glucose control
- Cofactor in neurotransmitter synthesis
- Maintaining normal levels of homocysteine
- Protein and histamine metabolisation
FAQ
'What is the capsule size?'
The capsule size is 00. Capsules sizes are named by numerical values, numbered: 000, 00, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 from biggest to smallest.
'How do I start taking magnesium and what should I expect?'
As with any new supplement, always start with 1 capsule first and slowly build up from there or as professionally directed. Everyone responds slightly differently to different forms of magnesium (of which there are many). Some people find magnesium glycinate very relaxing whereas others find it mildly energising. This may dictate when you choose to take it.
'Does the amount of magnesium refer to the gross weight of product or net magnesium?'
Different forms of magnesium have different 'weights' of magnesium (elemental) to them. What this means is how much of the compound is actually magnesium. Our Magnesium glycinate contains 13.5% by weight, of which is very bioavailable. Even though other forms of magnesium such as magnesium oxide have a higher distribution, they have a lower bioavailability. Don't be fooled by other manufacturers displaying much higher dosages of magnesium (like 1500mg), they are showing the gross weight of the product, not the net magnesium.
'Why is there only 1mg of B6 in the supplement?'
B vitamins work together and in balance. Our goal with this supplement was to provide a gentle dose of B6 that facilitates the utilisation of magnesium whilst also representing what you find in food. This also means if you take 4 capsules across the day, you won't upset the balance of B vitamins in the body.
'What happens if I take too much?'
Magnesium is 'hydrophillic' meaning it attracts water. This means it can pull water into the bowel. High doses may cause more loose bowel movements. If this occurs, lower the dose until you reach bowel tolerance.
'Does magnesium compete with other minerals?'
Magnesium is a key electrolye in the body alongside calcium, potassium and sodium. In order to maintain mineral balance, we recommend making sure you are getting adequate dietary intake of the other electrolytes too.
'Magnesium gives me vivid dreams, why is that?'
Magnesium can facilitate rapid eye movement (REM) sleep where we tend to dream more. Dreaming is a normal part of healthy sleep.
'What is the maximum number of capsules I can take in one go?'
We recommend taking no more than 2 capsules in one serving, and a maximum of 4 per day or as professionally directed.
'Will magnesium glycinate help me sleep?'
Magnesium glycinate is often taken for sleep because glycine (which it is chelated to) has a calming effect on the nervous system along with magnesium. Take 1 to 2 capsules 30 mins to 1 hour before bedtime to aid sleep.
'Can I take magnesium on an empty stomach?'
We recommend taking magnesium after food (within 1 - 2 hours after eating) for optimal absorption and to avoid stomach upset.
